Ring with Floral Motif

English (?) (Jeweler)
late 18th century
gold, silver, enamel, diamond
(18th and 19th Centuries , Jewelry)

This ring is of the popular "navette" (boat) shape. The diamonds are set in red enamel, framing and creating a floral motif. From the 1720s more diamonds than ever came to Europe. The international network of traders and skilled diamond cutters that had long linked Lisbon, Amsterdam, and London with India and Persia expanded to include Brazil, where new mines were opened. However, despite their dazzle, diamonds were often mined by enslaved people working under strict supervision to ensure that nothing was stolen.
