Tablet Case (Aide-Mémoire)
Small but finely decorated tablet cases were often exchanged as personal gifts, as implied by the French inscription on this example: Souvenir d'Amitié (souvenir of friendship). Their flattened cylindrical shape made them suitable for carrying in a pocket. This case contains an ivory tablet and a pencil for taking notes. The ivory could easily be rubbed clean when a new note needed to be taken. This example still contains traces of writing from a previous owner.
