This type of sash was produced and worn in India, Iran, and the Ottoman Empire and traded via the Indian Ocean and the Red and Mediterranean Seas. When worn, these sashes were draped or knotted to showcase the ornately decorated ends, usually incorporating woven or embroidered floral motifs. The style differed in each location. In India, for example, they were sometimes worn as shawls draped over the shoulder, and in Istanbul they were worn as belts.
