Portuguese Synagogue at Amsterdam
(18th and 19th Centuries )
Brandon received a medal at the Paris Salon of 1867, the year this work was shown as "Le Sermon du daian Cardozo; synagogue d'Amsterdam, le 22 juillet, 1866." It is a dramatically lighted interior view of one of Europe's most famous and picturesque synagogues (consecrated 1675). The sermon is being delivered by the distinguished Talmudist David de Jahacob Lopez Cardozo (1808-1890), who was appointed "ab bet din" of the Portuguese Synagogue in 1839. Another painting of this interior, "La synagogue portugaise d'Amsterdam," is cited by H. Mireur (Vente Brandon, Paris, 1897, "Dictionaire des Ventes d'Art," Paris, 1911, 1: 440).
