Eagle and Chamois

Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1795 - 1875) (Artist)
Eck et Durand (French, 1838-1863) (Founder)
Fannières Frères (French) (Founder)
modeled ca. 1824-1826
bronze with dark brown patina
(18th and 19th Centuries )

This plaque was intended to be mounted on a piece of furniture or set in the base of a clock. This particular example was cast by the foundry Eck et Durand for the firm of silversmiths Fannière Frères. It was likely cast at the same time as another relief in the collection, "Eagle with Snake," WAM 27.189. It is part of a series of four bas reliefs Barye made which included, "Eagle with Snake," "Eagle with Chamois," "Pointer," and "Running Elk." These were made with and without frames.

Inscription

[Signature] Stamped (before casting ?) in the model on rock to the right: BARYE; [Transcription] Incised on reverse: F.F. FANNIERE Fres; [Transcription] Incised in raised letters on reverse: Eck et Durand.
