Venus

Description Provenance Credit
Description This nude can be identified as Venus from the five spiral cones in her hair, a misunderstanding of conical shells alluding to the goddess's birth from the sea. The proportions, with a thickened waist and less graceful contours than those of the northern Italian examples, indicate a German origin.
Provenance Henry Walters, Baltimore [date and mode of acquisition unknown]; Walters Art Museum, 1931, by bequest.
