Coin of Julian
Obverse: Bust of Julian, diademed, bearded, cuirassed, right; beaded border. Reverse: Bull, facing right, two stars above, eagle to right; beaded border.
The town of Arelate (modern Arles) changed its name twice to Constantina, the first time in 328 to honor the birth of Constantine II. When Constantine II died in 340, the name reverted back to Arelate, but it changed again in 355 at Julian’s instigation, in honor of Constantine I, and remained so from then on. The mint, accordingly changed its mark from ARL to CONST during these periods. The initial S is a separate mark indicating that this coin was produced by the second (secunda) workshop at Arles.
