Pilgrim Medallion with Christ, Angels, Apostles, and Saints

Made from molten glass pressed in a mold, this type of medallion was mass-produced and served as a souvenir or memento of a visit to a holy shrine. The medallion, with a typically Byzantine composition, shows that craftsmen in the port city of Venice were familiar with the art of Constantinople.

Inscription

Cast labels identify the figures on the medallion. On the middle register, reading right to left and top to bottom: left of leftmost figure: B/TO/LO/M/US; [Transcription] B[AR]T[H]OLOM[E]US; [Translation] Bartholomew; left of the central figure: S/ IC; [Transcription] S[ANCTUS]/I[ESUS] C[HRISTUS]; [Translation] Saint (refers to Bartholemew), Jesus Christ; right of the central figure: S/ XC; [Transcription] S[ANCTUS]/ XC[hristus]; Saint (refers to Mark), Christ; right of rightmost figure: MARCUS; [Transcription] MARCUS; [Translation] Mark.

On the lower register, reading right to left and top to bottom: left of leftmost figure: S/IA/CO/b;[Transcription] S[ANCTUS] IACOB; [Translation] Saint James; left of the central figure: S; [Transcription] S[ANCTUS]; [Translation] Saint; right of the central figure: F; [Transcription] F[rancis]; [Translation] Francis; right of rightmost figure: SP/T; [Transcription] S[ANCTUS] P[E]T[ER]; [Translation] Saint Peter.
