Standing Lion

Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1795 - 1875) (Artist)
ca. 1850s-1860s
watercolor with gum heightening on moderately textured, thick, cream wove paper
(18th and 19th Centuries )

In many of Barye's watercolors, the subjects appear in profile. This orientation resulted from his practice of using calques, or tracings, to transfer the outlines of the animals to the watercolor paper. He would then reinforce the contours with ink before painting in the backgrounds.

Inscription

[Signature] Inscribed in dark brown watercolor at left lower edge of recto: BARYE; [Number] Inscribed in graphite, at lower left, on verso: 6.
