Amazon in Costume of 1830
(18th and 19th Centuries )
In the 19th century, the term "Amazon" was applied to women riders as well as to their long riding habits or costumes. This young woman mounted side-saddle may be Hélène of Mecklenberg-Schwerin (1814-1858), who married the duke of Orléans in 1837.
