Passion Scenes
(Medieval Europe )
The form of this ivory, four panels assembled like a folding screen, is extremely rare. The panels are carved with Passion scenes that follow Parisian tradition, yet this ivory is attributed to a German workshop based on its style and some of the details, such as the pierced rosettes above the gables. At the Crucifixion, the Virgin is pierced by a sword emerging from the side of Christ, a feature of German mysticism referring to her great sorrow (Luke 2:34-35).
