Stork Standing on a Turtle
(18th and 19th Centuries )
One possible source for this amusing but improbable subject was an illustration of an ancient oil lamp published in 1804 by the engraver Lorenzo Roccheggiani (active 1800-17). Another possible source is an engraving of a bird on a turtle identified as after an Oriental bronze by Maria de Wilde (1682-1729).
