Diptych Leaf with the Crucifixion
(Medieval Europe )
The image of the Crucifixion acquired new poignancy during the later Middle Ages, when devotion became more personal and popular guides to meditation emphasized Christ's suffering on the cross. On this panel, the theme of suffering is also reflected in the anguished poses of the Virgin and St. John.
