Saint Peter

Mosan Workshop (Workshop)
1160-1180 (Medieval)
champlevé enamel on gilded copper
(Medieval Europe )

On this round-headed plaque, the enthroned Apostle Peter holds a book in his drapery-covered left hand and clutches the keys to the kingdom of heaven and earth in his right hand. These keys are an identifying attribute, or symbol, of Saint Peter in Christian art. This plaque has five holes allowing it to be attached to a reliquary shrine or altar front.
