Paul-François-Jean-Nicolas, Vicomte Barras (1755-1829)
(18th and 19th Centuries )
Barras participated in the overthrow of Maximilien Robespierre, who had instituted the Reign of Terror (September 1793-July 1794), the most brutal phase if the French Revolution in which many thousands of people were executed. It was Barras, in 1795, who ordered General Bonaparte to disperse a crowd of counterrevolutionaries in Paris with cannon fire.
