Seated Bear

Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1795 - 1875) (Artist)
modeled ca. 1833; first cast 1833-1838
golden bronze with dark brown patina
(18th and 19th Centuries )

"Martin," as bears were fondly nicknamed by visitors to the Jardin des Plantes, playfully tugs its foot with its forepaw. At the zoological garden in Paris, the bears were among the most popular attractions.
