Originally, this was one side of a bilateral encolpion similar to Walters 61.146. Rather with with an image of the Virgin and Child (compare Walters 61.166), the family tree of Christ (Tree of Jesse) culminates here with a scene of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (where both Jesus and His mother are included).
