Drinking Cup in the Form of a Standard Bearer
(Renaissance Europe )
The head of the soldier is removable so that the body, dressed in parade armor, could be filled with strong drink. The subject suggests that this was commissioned by a military company or guild for presentation to one of its members on a special occasion. Spectacular table wares, especially pieces that disguise their true function, were appealing to collectors.
