Medal of Ferdinand I (1503-64) as Emperor Elect

Leone Leoni (Italian, ca. 1509-1590) (Artist)
1558 (Renaissance)
silver
(Renaissance Europe )

Ferdinand was the younger brother of Emperor Charles V, father of the future emperor Maximilian II, and grandfather of Archduke Albert of Austria. On the other side of the medal is a bust of Maximilian as king of Bohemia. The inscription calls Ferdinand "Emperor Elect." The medal was made after his election as emperor in 1558 and before the death of Emperor Charles V a few months later. The medal also supports Maximilian's prestige by association with his father.
