Paris au Hasard

Geroges Montorgueil (French, 1857 - 1933) (Author)
Émile Carayon (French, 1843 - 1909) (Binder)
Henri Beraldi (French, 1849 - 1931) (Publisher)
1895
ink on paper bound between boards covered with calfskin, goatskin, and gold
(Manuscripts and Rare Books)

Rather than creating a purely decorative design, Émile Carayon devoted this binding's entire front cover to creating a picture that directly reflects the contents of the book. Using a technique called cuir incisé, or incised leather, he brought artist Auguste Lepère's (1849–1918) drawing of a fashionable young woman into lifelike relief. (Lepère also made the wood engravings that illustrate the text.)
