Amazon in Costume of 1830
(18th and 19th Centuries )
In 19th-century France, the term "Amazone" was applied to women riders. This young woman mounted side-saddle has been tentatively identified as Hélène of Mecklenberg-Schwerin (1814-1858), who married the duke of Orléans in 1837. The horse wears a double bridle with no noseband, suggesting the rider has a high level of skill and is riding a well-trained horse. The high action of the horse's front leg and short tail add to the fashionable air of the pair.
