Paris Kiosk

Jean Béraud (French, 1849-1935) (Artist)
ca. 1880
oil on canvas
(18th and 19th Centuries )

Two figures pause at a street corner to read posters on an advertising column. These columns were installed throughout Paris in the middle of the 19th century to stop bills being posted on the sides of buildings – part of a larger effort to regularize and beautify the city streets. Women are outnumbered by men in this scene and appear to be watched by them. On the opposite side of the street a man with a moustache appears to stare at the woman in dark red, while to the right a group of men lounge on the balcony of a café. Daily life on the street of Paris, Béraud seems to suggest, is just as much a performance to be enjoyed as the operas advertised by the colorful posters. The painting is inscribed to the celebrated auctioneer ("commissaire-priseur") Jules Auguste Boussaton (1821-1901?). He owned paintings by Boldini, Bouguereau, Gerome, Meissonier, Sisley, Tissot, and Troyon, among others.
