Shown in the second Impressionist group exhibition in 1876, this is one of a small group of paintings in which Monet depicts his first wife, Camille, sitting under lilac trees in the garden of their house in Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris where they moved in late 1871. The Monet family was seeking a bucolic setting, but as the decade wore on modern development encroached all around their home - their house was a few minutes’ walk from an ironworks, and other factories sprang up close by. Although this modernization is not seen in the painting, the fashionable dress of Monet’s wife roots the painting firmly in their contemporary moment.
