Pilgrim Medallion with Christ, Angels, Apostles, and Saints

Made from molten glass pressed in a mold, this type of medallion was mass-produced and served as a souvenir or memento of a visit to a holy shrine. The medallion, with a typically Byzantine composition, shows that craftsmen in the port city of Venice were familiar with the art of Constantinople.

left of the central figure: S[ANCTUS] [Translation] Saint
right of the central figure: F[RANCISCUS] [Translation] Francis
right of rightmost figure: S[ANCTUS] P[E]/T[RUS]; [Translation] Saint Peter.
