Diptych with Scenes of Christ's Life and Passion

French (Artist)
4th quarter 14th century (Medieval)
ivory
(Medieval Europe )

This diptych consists of three tiers in which the scenes are beneath arcades of five trefoil arches. The scenes, reading from the top left, include: Annunciation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Kiss of Judas, Death of Judas, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Ascension, and Pentecost.

The diptych was once supplied with a stand, attached through square holes pierced in the center arch of the two lower arcades. These are now plugged with ivory. There is an incised outline of the stand on the back and six V-shaped slots are filed into the back of each leaf.
