Profile Portrait of a Frenchman

This portrait medallion, carved in flat relief, is of a type that looks back to the format of Roman coins and was popular in the Renaissance in France, in the environment of the royal court, as well as in Italy. the hat is a French style from the decades around 1500 and the man here portrayed could be, for example, a diplomat or a scholar, in any case someone who would appreciate the use of a format validated by reference to Roman antiquity.
There is a slight chip at the man's nostril, and restoration along the left edge, about one half inch above the collar and extending upward about one inch. The restoration has either fallen out or been removed.
