(Manuscripts and Rare Books)
In the mid-19th century, just as today, illustrated books were a popular gift for adults and children. Producing a handsomely bound and illustrated work of classic literature could be a profitable enterprise. This French edition of Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" (1726) has illustrations by Paul Gavarni. J. J. Grandville, a contemporary of Gavarni's, also produced plates for a highly successful edition in 1838.
