Saint Joseph
(Medieval Europe )
This figure holding two doves can be identified as St. Joseph bringing an offering on the occasion of the Presentation of Christ to the temple. The figure was attached to a plaque by means of rivets, one at the neck and one between the legs. Relief figures such as this were commonly applied to enliven the surface of Limoges works such as devotional diptychs and reliquary shrines, some examples of which are on view in the Romanesque and Gothic Art gallery.
